Miller-Remick provided engineering and design services to design a campus thermal storage system integrated with the central chiller plant at the Lebanon VAMC. Miller-Remick performed a comprehensive evaluation of the campus central chiller plant, its historic energy usage and electric power purchase agreement to develop options for a campus chilled water thermal storage system. Our study presented the capital and operating cost impacts of many viable thermal storage solutions. The option with the highest long-term economic benefit was an ice-making chiller plant with a 48-tank ice storage array. Design included ice making chillers, ice storage tanks, pump systems, heat exchangers, electric substation, and state-of-the art control system that will integrate operations of the existing chiller plant with the thermal storage plant.
